COI Delegation meets with DUP, UUP on Irish language

In late 2008/early 2009, a delegation from the Church of Ireland's Church in Society committee met with representatives from the UUP and DUP to put forward the Church's view on the Irish language. In particular, the view was put forward that an interest in the language could be entirely compatible with a unionist political outlook. The document may be read in full at www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/Information/Submissions/Ch_Soc/coiirish.pdf). The report was presented to General Synod in May 2009.

Chas toscaireacht ó Eaglais na hÉireann le hionadaithe polaitiúla Aontachtacha ón UUP agus an DUP, faoi seach, ag tús na bliana seo. Chuir an toscaireacht cáipéis faoi bhráid na bpolaiteoirí, ag cur ina luí orthu a gcreideamh go bhféadfadh suim sa Ghaeilge a bheith ag teacht le Protastúnachas agus/nó le dearcadh polaitiúil aontachtach, agus go bhféadfadh ceangail le Gàidhlig na hAlban, Gaeilge Oileán Mhanainn, an Bhreatnais agus an Choirnis a bheith mar bhealaí le naisc a chruthú leis na réigiúin eile sa Ríocht Aontaithe/ar na hoileáin seo (féach www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/Information/Submissions/Ch_Soc/coiirish.pdf). Cuireadh an cháipeis faoi bhráid Shionad na hEaglaise i mí Bealtaine 2009.
